DATE                                30.01.12

WEATHER                      COLD BUT DRY

DISTANCE                      9 1/2 MILES

START / FINISH             CAR PARK AT BARROWBURN

I HAVE DONE THIS WALK SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE YEARS AND YET EACH TIME I SET OFF I STILL GET THAT FIRST TIME FEELING, I WILL ADMIT THAT I WAS FEELING A LITTLE BIT UNSURE THIS TIME WITH ALL THE SNOW THAT HAD BEEN FALLING, I AM QUITE HAPPY FOR SNOW TO FALL AND SETTLE BUT ONCE IT GETS ABOVE 3” I HAVE TROUBLE WITH SWINGING MY ARTY LEG WHICH MAKES LIFE A BIT DIFFICULT AT TIMES, SO I MENTALLY PREPARED MYSELF TO EITHER TURN BACK OR ALTER THE ROUTE. ON THE PLUS SIDE I HAVE WITH ME MY MICRO SPIKES WHICH REALLY ARE GREAT FOR GIVING THAT EXTRA BIT OF GRIP WHEN IT’S STARTS TO GET SLIPPERY.

ANY WAY THE CHEVIOTS BEING WHAT THEY ARE MEANS SNOW IN ONE VALLEY DOESN’T MEAN THAT THERE WILL BE SNOW IN THE NEXT VALLEY (I KNOW SOUNDS CRAZY). AS IT TURNED OUT I NEED"NT HAVE WORRIED ABOUT THE SNOW AT DEEPEST POINT IT ONLY GOT TO A COUPLE OF INCHES DEEP. THE WEATHER WAS VERY COLD BUT THE SUN DID PUT IN AN APPEARANCE WHICH ADDED TO THAT SPECIAL FEELING YOU GET WHEN IT’S JUST YOU AND YOU ALONE IN THE HILLS.

A FEW PHOTOS …………ENJOY

TAKEN FROM THE CAR PARK AT BARROWBURN LOOKING TOWARDS THE DEER HUT.

THE CROSSING AT THE HEPDEN BURN (THERE IS A FOOT BRIDGE HERE)

MY ROUTE UP LOUNGES KNOWE.

NEAR WHERE I ENTER THE FOREST LAST LOOK BACK DOWN TOWARDS THE FARM AT BARROWBURN AND THE COQUET VALLEY . I NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS VIEW.

NOW IN KIDLAND FOREST (MIDDLE HILL) LOOKING BACK AT A DISTANT SHILLHOPE LAW

LOOKING DOWN THE VALLEY OF THE USWAYFORD.

LOOKING BACK.

LOOKING AHEAD I DON'T KNOW THE NAME OF THIS PLANTATION BUT BEFORE I CAN GET TO IT I HAVE TO CROSS THE USWAY BURN.

THE REMOTE FARM AND FORD AT USWAYFORD.

MY ROUTE I CAN MAKE OUT A QUAD BIKE TRAIL THAT WILL MAKE LIFE A LITTLE BIT EASIER FOR ME ONLY TROUBLE IS I AM STILL ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE BURN.

TAKEN OFF THE FOOT BRIDGE , THE PATH ISN'T THAT GOOD AT THIS POINT MORE LIKE AN OLD SHEEP TRAIL , I DECIDE TO GO UP AND OVER THAN CROSS WHERE THE ROCK IS EXPOSED .

BACK ON THE PATH AGAIN I STILL HAVE GOT AN UNKNOWN BURN TO CROSS WITH NO BRIDGE.

THE CROSSING POINT ON THE UNKNOWN BURN , THERE ARE PLENTY OF LARGE ROCK TO HELP WHICH IS JUST AS WELL , WITH THE FREEZING TEMPRATURE THE LAST THING I WANT TO DO IS FALL IN OR GET A WET FOOT.

ENTERING THE PLANTATION , THE SNOW IS DEEPER HERE AND THE PATH HAS DISAPPEARED PLUS THE SNOW IS COVERING ALL THE DEEP RUTS AND POT HOLES MAKING MY LIFE THAT LITTLE BIT MORE TRICKY.

MY FIRST SIGHTING OF DAVIDSONS LINN.

AN OLD FORGOTTEN SHEEP STELL.

A FEW PHOTOS OF DAVIDSONS LINN I WAS HOPING THAT IT MIGHT HAVE FROZEN OVER .

AT THIS POINT THERE IS A BREAK IN THE CLOUDS AND EVEN A BIT OF SUN COMES OUT.

MY ROUTE NOW TAKES ME ALONG THE FOREST TRACK A FEW PHOTOS SHOWING SOME OF THE VIEWS.

NOW REJOINING THE TRACK I WAS ON EARLER TODAY .

STILL ONLY MY FOOT PRINTS IN THE SNOW.

NOW ON BARROW LAW LAST LOOK BACK DOWN THE USWAYFORD VALLEY.

THE END IS IN SIGHT BARROWBURN , THERE IS A TEA ROOM AT THIS FARM ITS WELL WORTH A VISIT GOOD FOOD & A LOVLEY WELCOME.

WELCOME TO THE CHEVIOTS IF YOU LIKE YOUR WALKS REMOTE AND PEACEFULL YOU CANT PICK A BETTER PLACE ...........DIDNT SEE A SINGLE PERSON ALL DAY.
